La Lancha Beach

La Lancha – Confessions on a wave in the summer

Surfing is an activity that encourages many to live that experience and others to want it to repeat always. It is an experience that fills you with joy, content, satisfaction, excitement and adrenaline. It’s an unforgettable moment from its beginning to its end.

The white wax on the board, its weight under your arm, all this indicates that you are ready to surf. But wait a minute… what waves? Which beach? Sayulita? La Lancha? They’re both fabulous, so you decide.

This time we are going to talk about La Lancha:

La Lancha BeachThe journey begins, the heat and humidity can be felt already and what you want is to get to the water soon. You start the walk to the beach: Mangroves in sight, logs, rocks, insects playing, fallen leaves, green leaves, wind, smiles, nerves, unknown people and friends too, it is a magical moment that begins to come true.

At last you arrive, your feet touch and feel the sand and the first thing you see is the deep blue of the sea and you observe the waves: What is there? Left or right? The right-hand wave is soft, gentle and long while the left-hand wave is fast and challenging. Then you wait and breathe. And you decide: it’s time to get in the water.
Your fingers feel the softness and freshness of the water and you start to move as if you were a fish in the water, paddling on until you reach the point where the waves begin to break. At that moment your heart beats hard and fast, you decide to state calm and patient so you can try to catch a nice wave.

You feel the moment, you see the wave that you have been waiting for and you think : it’s mine, it’s mine; I’m at the right spot, I’m in the moment and you start padding to pick up speed so that the wave pushes you. You push up with your arms, lift your chest and legs, tilt your weight and start the best moment: the ride. You do this repeatedly. It’s different, fun and challenging. You end up exhausted but happy, cheerful and satisfied.

You repeat the experience over and over again and realize that surfing is not only a sport, it is a lifestyle, a way of connecting with nature, of fostering respect and passion for life.

Cheer up and live the experience at La Lancha beach!

Ecosistemas en La Lancha, Nayarit

Cocodrilos y Manglares

Crocodile on the beach, ecosystem in La Lancha
By Wildmex

Ecosystems in La Lancha, Nayarit

Cocodriles and Mangrove

Mangrove swamps, Ecosystems in La LanchaMangrove swamps are unique ecological communities that link freshwater and oceanic ecosystems and host a rich diversity of animal species. A mangrove commonly refers to two different things: a tidal swamp ecosystem found in tropical deltas, estuaries, lagoons or islands, and the characteristic tree species populating this ecosystem (with roots that have a complex salt filtration system and ability to adapt to harsh conditions). Its purpose (in the Ecosystems in La Lancha beach for example) is to filter, protect, and maintain the quality of its natural habitat.

In Mexico, there are four types of mangroves depending on their root systems and functions: Red, White, Black, and Zaragoza o Botoncillo, of which some tolerate up to 70ups. Each one provides different natural and commercial resources.

Mangroves develop important ecosystem functions. Perhaps the most important role of mangroves is that they protect vulnerable coastlines from flooding. They hold soil together and prevent coastal erosion as well as shield inland areas during storms to minimize destructive impact. They biologically filter the quality of water creating opportunity for diverse forms of wildlife (trees, fish nurseries, birds, and reptiles) to thrive. Mangroves also are studied and known to break down pollutants and play a large role in the capturing and storing of carbon.

Crocodile on the beachMexico is divided into 5 regions where mangroves can be found: the North Pacific, Central Pacific, South Pacific, Gulf of Mexico, and the Yucatán Peninsula. The state of Jalisco located on the Central Pacific coast has had the greatest loss of mangroves with 8,098ha from 1970-1980 to 2,201ha by 2010, thus losing more than 70% of its territory.

In Banderas Nayarit Bay, there is an important extension of these mangroves located in front of our office in Punta de Mita leading to a special virgin beach “La Lancha”. Standing out in their size and beauty, these tropical trees house impressive exotic plant and animal life. Crocodiles, a common species found inhabiting this region, have lived here many years before this land was discovered. This is contrary to the idea that crocodiles were introduced to this area. Crocodiles utilize this area for all aspects of their life cycle including feeding, breeding, and rearing young.

Our friends from the Sanctuary of Crocodiles ‘El Cora’WildMex is an adventure company that cares about nature and the life it creates and sustains. Nature is our home and we take various actions to raise awareness of the care and responsibility necessary to protect it. It is our partnership to these ecosystems that allow us to enjoy and share its energy and purpose. WildMex ExcursionOn Thursday, August 15th 2019, a collaboration took place with friends from the Sanctuary of Crocodiles ‘El Cora’ who explained the importance of mangroves, their functions and benefits of its diversity, as well as focusing on the facts and myths concerning crocodiles to be able to better understand them. After the discussion, a tour was given where people were able to have a greater and more personal experience with the mangrove and its unique plant and animal wildlife species.

Sayulita massive beach cleaning!

June 10th , 300 Volunteers out to set an example

Today we are with Corona in the campaign Desplastifícate

Sayulita, Nay.

In the framework of the World Environment and Oceans days that are celebrated this month, Grupo Modelo will hold from June 1 to June 15 days focused on cleaning, restoring, conserving Mexico's water and cleaning its beaches.

The movement of Corona Desplastifícate began this Saturday, June 8, in partnership with Modelo Volunteers, in more than 25 beaches in Mexican territory. The brand works to become one of the greatest agents of change in the world by cleaning about 500 beaches in more than 23 countries, thanks to the support of 300,000 volunteers worldwide.

In collaboration with Corona, one of its global brands, they reinforce the environmental objective, cleaning 150 kilometers of beaches in 14 states of the country, hoping to remove more than 78,000 kilos of garbage and more than 2 tons of PET, impacting around 1.2 million meters squares of coast in Mexico.

In Sayulita, Nayarit, more than 300 volunteers were gathered, who helped this movement achieve two objectives: to help clean the beaches and raise awareness about the damage we are doing to the environment.

The day began at 7 am in Sayulita, where volunteers, including children, youth and adults, with gloves and sacks gathered to begin cleaning; once it was finished, there was a talk on environmental care and a series of recreational activities and workshops.

"It is a movement that we are creating, it is the largest in Mexico of protection of the oceans. We are a brand with a great commitment to Mexico. He was born more than five years ago; It started with cleaning days and we saw that we could make a much bigger difference: raise awareness, "said Clarissa Pantoja, Director of Corona Beer, to El Economista.

He stressed that one of the challenges of the movement is to raise awareness about the use of plastic not only on beaches but in cities, which adds to other actions such as recycling programs, the implementation of cups of corn starch in recent editions of the festival Corona Capital and the use of biodegradable rings for the six pack, which "seek to inspire more people to join and replicate this message in the world".

"Every time the goals are bigger. We are very happy because with this celebration of the World Environment Day we had more than 20,000 volunteers who registered, we have more than 65 activities throughout the country, it is a giant wave. we are focusing on water cleaning, conservation of these bodies of water and cleaning of beaches.

Wastewater in Sayulita

Alerta Bahía News - Before yesterday morning in Nuevo Vallarta Nayarit, state and federal authorities announced the start-up of the wastewater treatment plant in Sayulita, this means contamination of the area is finished, the next step is that the Oromapas (potable water operator) operate all the service because they are the only ones authorized for such action.

This may interest you: Sayulita Water Quality 2024

Director of the State Council of Potable Water of Nayarit Martha Patricia Urenda Delgado reported that the modernization of the wastewater treatment plant in Sayulita is ready, as well as the construction of a submarine emitter which is about to conclude and come to benefit the entire bay.

The plant has already begun to operate with a capacity of 20 liters per second, but it will have a growth of 80 liters per second and is ready to receive all that is generated when it is high holiday season.

Sewage treatment plant said the interviewee, had an investment of 41 million pesos and said that with good maintenance, this plant will have a useful life of 25 years and after this time, then it would require a good investment. They will be working three persons permanently and those determined by Oromapas.

Sayulita: Paradise Lost or Found?

Reading online about the water quality problems in Sayulita really put me off coming here, but my backpacking budget and the opportunity to volunteer at Wildmex lured me to Sayulita like a child to dorilocos. And you know what? I’m so glad I made it here. Here’s my take on Sayulita, as an experienced traveller from Australia, who has done a decent amount of vagabonding, sun-soaking and margarita drinking in Mexico – provecho!

Sayulita, if you don’t know, is about a 45-minute drive North of Puerto Vallarta. Although a relatively new town, made popular by international surf competitions in the 60’s, it still has a cool old-meets-new, chic-meets-rustic hippy vibe, and the great surfing conditions are still one of the main draws.

The town centre is a few cobblestone steps back from the beach, and the main plaza is surrounded by restaurants, such as the environmentally conscious Chocobanana, and a few lively clubs – Yambak and Don Pato being the main multi-level ones. If you hit the clubs a bit earlier in the night you can catch local musicians playing reggae or jazz. Atico is another vibing venue just off the main plaza where you can sip cervezas to live music each night.

The melting pot community here consists of: local surfers from the town or the nearby states of Nayarit or Jalisco; many Mexican, Canadian, American, Argentinian, European, and – of course – Australian tourists; and locals, who live in the area or travel to work here from other towns like Punta de Mita. The eclectic mix of people from all over gives this Pueblo Magico an international feel, as well as some inflated international prices. But it’s still possible to find tasty tacos for 13 pesos. If you want local prices stay away from fancy furnishings and go for roadside huts, and of course make an effort to order in Spanish, or you just may get gringo price.

Paradise Lost

Now there is a big, obvious problem in Sayulita that literally does stink: the sewage treatment plant is right by the local beach. Treated, but still smelly, water runs out into the sea near the point break, and many people here have experienced “Sayulita sickness” after swimming or surfing in the sea nearby. I was not going to swim here initially, as there are plenty of gorgeous beaches nearby (like La Lancha and Playa de los Muertos), however I gave in and have been fine. I would just say: swim when the plant is not operating after 4:00pm, or just go to the left or the right of the sewage facility. Many many people surf and swim here daily and are fine.

But Sayulita shouldn’t be defined by this one potential problem. The people that end up in Sayulita are special, and when you take time to chill in a cafe you will find many people who choose to live here with their families, or at least spend half the year here. It’s easy to strike up a conversation with a local at a cafe, or hitch a ride in one of the golf buggies cruising around – Sayulita has a positive energy. And if you want to be fit and healthy there are mountains to climb, beaches to surf, paddle board and explore, and, if you want to undo all your good efforts afterwards, there are great food and drinks to be had.

Paradise Found

On my first night here the sun was setting near the point break, there was a rainbow to my right, and turtles were being released on the beach. The surreal visuals were reminiscent of a Baz Luhrmann film. Yeah, Sayulita has a water quality problem, due to poor planning, rapid expansion and the infrastructural deficits of a developing country, but if you choose to come here, which I’m glad I did, you can’t help but have a good time! My verdict: Sayulita is the best, most colourful, exciting montage of memories I have made Mexico. Enjoy the food, the beaches and the unfolding story that your footsteps will create.

Mountain Biking in the Sayulita Area

There is a range of mountain biking available in the Sayulita and Punta Mita area, with trails suitable for beginners through to advanced riders. The main existing options are the Malpaso Singletracks (only available for guided tours) and Punta Sayulita (beginner level). WildMex has worked hard over the years to develop good mountain bike trails in the area for the local community and for visitors, and we are currently developing an exciting new MTB project in the Monkey Mountain area. Read on to discover the latest news on our MTB trails!

Malpaso Singletracks

The Malpaso Singletrack Trails near Sayulita are some of the first trails in Mexico specifically designed and built for mountain biking. Proudly built by WildMex, they offer a wide range of mountain biking, suitable for the adventurous beginner through to advanced riders. The trails take you through the lush jungle in the area between Sayulita and San Pancho, with rides varying from mellow singletrack to challenging and fast routes with berms, steep climbs and rock gardens.

The area the mountain bike trails pass through is majority privately owned. The owners are under no obligation to let us ride on their property, however, in order to support the local community, they provide access under certain regulations, with the goal of preserving the environment and ensuring no accidents happen on their property. WildMex is fortunate enough to have permission to maintain and guide trips on the existing trails in the Malpaso area.

For this reason, WildMex offers guided mountain biking tours, but is now unable to offer unguided mountain bike rentals to be ridden in the Malpaso trail system. Please help the local riding community and the Malpaso land owners to keep a friendly relationship, and if you are visiting our area and would like to ride the Malpaso Trails, do so with an authorized company.

Our mountain bike tours and rentals are entirely non-profit; 100% of our proceeds go towards maintaining existing trails and building new ones so the community and its visitors can enjoy access to more multi-use trails in the Sayulita, San Pancho and Punta Mita area. We are currently working towards developing a further MTB trail network in the Monkey Mountain area (read more below).

All our guides:

  • Are local mountain bike riders
  • Help build and maintain the trails and know them like the backs of their hands
  • Are trained mechanics – just in case anything does go wrong on the trails!

Help protect the environment, and support local riders in the community by taking a guided mountain bike tour with WildMex.

Trail Building Project

WildMex has proudly developed some of the first trails in Mexico specifically designed and sustainably built for mountain biking. The Malpaso trails now provide around a day’s worth of riding, but we don’t want to stop there! We are keen to continue building so that the community and its visitors can enjoy access to more multi-use trails in the Sayulita, San Pancho and Punta Mita area.

That is why WildMex is now beginning a new trail building project in the Monkey Mountain area between Sayulita and Punta de Mita. We are working with local riders to build these trails, and our intention is that they will benefit the entire community as they will be multi-use, creating options for hiking and bird watching as well as mountain biking.

Wildmex is committed to continuing to develop mountain biking in the area for the local community, and our existing trails have already opened up the sport to many local people. All our tours are guided by local mountain bike riders who helped build the trails, and all proceeds from the tours go towards cleaning and maintaining our existing trails, and developing the new trail network – our tours and rentals are 100% non-profit.

Keep checking back here to keep up to date on our new trail project!

WildMex Sayulita by Bus Coming from Puerto Vallarta

Sayulita is one of the most important destinations in Mexico. Every year, thousands of tourists visit this Magical Town (known affectionately as Pueblo Mágico) as there are many activities to do for families, friends, loved ones or by yourself.  Sayulita has something to offer for everyone! One of the FAQS about Sayulita transportation is: How do you get to Sayulita by bus?  Keep reading to find the answer!

Our WildMex Office is easily accessible by bus, so if you’re coming from Puerto Vallarta, here is the information you need to have for a safe arrival:

Sayulita by bus coming from PUERTO VALLARTA AIRPORT

When coming from the Puerto Vallarta Airport, exit the airport at the Arrivals area and cross the street on the pedestrian bridge, which ends directly at the bus stop. The line that goes to Sayulita is COMPOSTELA and their buses are green and white.  Look for the name “Sayulita” written on the windshield of the bus.Important note: Not all COMPOSTELA buses go to Sayulita. The COMPOSTELA-SAYULITA buses should pass every 20 minutes. There is always someone working in the bus stop, so you can tell them that you are heading to Sayulita and he will tell you when the right bus comes along.

Sayulita by bus coming from Downtown Puerto Vallarta

If you’re staying downtown, to get to Sayulita you’ll have to take two buses.  The best option is to go from the Malecon and head east, walking a couple blocks up until you see a series of public buses zooming by. Once there, look for a blue sign indicating a bus stop. Take any bus heading north that has “Walmart” written on the windshield. Get off at Walmart. You’ll notice two bus waiting areas. Facing Walmart and Sam’s Club, walk to the larger bus waiting area on the left. There is usually someone with a clipboard stationed there to direct passengers to the correct bus for their desired destination. Board a green and white Compostela bus with the word Sayulita written on the windshield. Not all COMPOSTELA buses go to Sayulita.

Sayulita by bus coming from NUEVO VALLARTA

To take the bus to Sayulita, go to Mega on the main highway (or the closest big convenient store going north) and jump on the green and white Compostela bus with the word “Sayulita” written on the windshield. Not all COMPOSTELA buses go to Sayulita.

WildMex from the Bus Stop

Once you get to the bus station in Sayulita, walk straight on the main street (Revolución), then turn right on the first street after you walk across the bridge (Pelícanos).  Keep going straight towards the beach and you’ll find our office on your left hand, half a block from the sand. There is no missing it!
