How to Pick My Surfboard: A Comprehensive Guide

Walking into a surf shop and facing a wall of surfboards can be daunting, especially for beginners. With so many shapes, sizes, and styles available, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. But fear not! We're here to guide you through the process of picking the perfect surfboard that suits your needs and preferences.

Surfboards of various shapes and sizes displayed in a surf shop.

Understanding Surfboard Basics

Thickness

The thickness of a surfboard determines its float or volume. A thicker board is easier to paddle and stand up on, making it ideal for beginners. However, a thinner board offers a livelier feel and better maneuverability.

Width

Wider boards provide more stability, making them easier to surf, especially for beginners. However, they can be trickier to handle on steep or hollow waves and make duck diving more challenging.

Length

Longer boards are easier to paddle and catch waves with, making them ideal for beginners. They offer stability and glide, making paddling into waves easier. Shorter boards, on the other hand, offer more maneuverability and are better suited for experienced surfers.

Common Surfboard Designs

Foam Board

Foam boards are perfect for beginners as they are soft, stable, and float well. They provide a safe learning environment until you're ready to progress to a hard-top longboard.

Longboard

Longboards are characterized by their length, ranging from 8 to 12 feet. They offer great stability and are ideal for beginners and smooth, relaxed surfing.

Funboard

Funboards are a hybrid between shortboards and longboards, offering versatility and ease of use. They are a good option for transitioning from a longboard to a shorter board.

Hybrid

Hybrid boards combine elements from different board styles, offering a mix of performance and versatility. They are suitable for smaller waves and offer a wider range of fin setups.

Shortboard

Shortboards are designed for experienced surfers looking to push their limits. They offer quick maneuverability and are ideal for critical sections of the wave.

Fish

Fish boards are short and stubby, making them ideal for mushy waves. They offer speed and paddle well, making them suitable for flat sections of waves.

Gun

Guns are massive wave surfboards designed for big wave locations. They offer speed and stability for riding large drops.

Picking the right surfboard is essential for enjoying your surfing experience. Consider your skill level, wave conditions, and surfing style when choosing a board. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced surfer, there's a perfect board out there for you.

  2. Inhale deeply, gracefully sweep your arms overhead, embracing the vastness of the sky above; exhale, gracefully fold forward into Uttanasana, surrendering to the Earth's pull with each breath.
  3. As you inhale, find length in your spine, drawing your torso halfway up into Ardha Uttanasana, a graceful pause to foster a sense of openness and extension.
  4. With a mindful exhale, plant your palms firmly on the ground, step back into Plank pose, channeling strength and stability through your entire body.
  5. Inhale, feel the energy coursing through your being as you lower down with control, either transitioning into a gentle Chaturanga or gently lowering all the way to your belly.
  6. As you inhale, rise into Cobra pose, lifting your heart to the sky, while keeping your shoulders relaxed, inviting a sense of expansiveness and vitality.
  7. Exhale, ground down through your palms and press back into Downward Facing Dog, allowing your body to stretch and release any tension accumulated throughout the practice.
  8. Inhale deeply, lift your heels high, bend your knees, and gracefully hop forward into Bunny Hops, igniting a sense of playfulness and lightness in your practice.
  9. Exhale, softly land back into Uttanasana, feeling a sense of surrender and release as your belly gently rests on your thighs.
  10. Inhale, find length in your spine once again, lifting halfway up with Ardha Uttanasana, cultivating a profound connection between breath and movement.
  11. With a mindful exhale, fold forward into Uttanasana, allowing yourself to release any remaining tension and sink deeper into the present moment.
  12. Inhale, bend your knees and sink your hips back into Utkatasana, Chair pose, embodying strength and determination as you ground down through your feet and lift your arms high.
  13. Exhale, transition into Navasana, Boat pose, balancing on your sitting bones, igniting your core, and awakening your inner strength.
  14. In Navasana, engage your core as you row the boat, inhaling as you lower towards the earth and exhaling as you rise, fostering resilience and perseverance with each movement.
  15. Hug your knees to your chest, rock back, and forth, building momentum and vitality as you prepare to rise back to standing in Utkatasana, symbolizing your readiness to face any challenges with courage and grace.
  16. Exhale, press firmly into the earth, and rise back up to standing, embodying strength, stability, and poise.
  17. Repeat this empowering sequence, adding Handstand Pike variations if you're feeling adventurous, and embrace the transformative journey of yoga to elevate your surfing experience to new heights.

Yoga offers a holistic approach to surf fitness. By focusing on balance, core strength, and flexibility, various yoga practices prepare your body and mind for the demands of surfing. Incorporate yoga sessions into your weekly routine to enhance your surfing experience.

To maximize your performance on the waves, consider integrating gym workouts specifically tailored for surfers. Inspired by insights from experts like physiologist Tim Brown, these workouts target key muscle groups essential for paddling and maneuvering on the board.

We’ve spent four ACTION packed days learning to surf in Mexico together, but do YOU remember what you’ve learned? Or will you FLOUNDER when put to the test?

Day 5 is the last day of camp, and we’re not letting you slack! You get one last day of THRILLING surfing in the Pacific Ocean. BUT this time, you’re taking the lead.

Uh-huh, it’s just like Blue Crush–AND you’re the star.

From remembering common surfing mistakes to recapping wave selection, we give you a final chance to make yourself proud with your hard work. Whatever you need to practice, Day 5 is the day to master the skill.

This isn’t a solo mission, though. Our pro surfers are always on hand to give you help and pointers. Pushing you to learn is our goal, buuuut we’re also in the water to give you extra tips, tricks and guidance amongst the waves.

Hey, teamwork makes the dreamwork–and helps you catch the GREATEST wave ever.

You’ll be skimming the waves like Poseidon, we promise.

Ready to BRUSH UP on Day 5? Scroll down to see what’s on the menu.

Can YOU handle the surf? Let’s do this!

The Final Wave Selection Lowdown

How to AVOID common surfing mistakes!

There are some common themes throughout the Wild Mex surf lessons, and binary wave selection is one you just can’t ignore.

On Day 5 of the course, we want YOU to actively think, ‘Can I Catch This Wave?’ It’s time for you to take your coastal destiny into your hands–go forth and grasp that gorgeous surf!

Of course, we’ll rehash the common mistakes you make as a beginner surfer to keep them fresh in your mind. However, with four prior surf sessions under your belt, you’ll be able to answer these important questions yourself.

Common surfing mistakes happen! But at this point, most of our surfers are confident with binary wave selection. Yup, we’re talking about YOU!

When you reach Day 5, getting dunked and missing potential waves will be a thing of the past. Byeeeee, baby!

Beginner To Intermediate - Catch Waves Like A Pro

BEGONE to all mistakes you make as a beginner surfer!

Now you’ve honed your dynamic wave selection skills, it’s time to think about moving from beginner skills to intermediate surfing. This might sound a li’l scary, but we KNOW you can handle it!

Forget considering if you can catch the wave (psst, you can!). It’s time to ask yourself, ‘Where Do I Need To Be In Order To Catch This Wave?’ We’re upping the stakes, but you already have the knowledge to play!

Here, we’re all about mastering your wave reading. No crystal ball is needed to predict where waves will break! Picking the right location - surfline is a tool you already know. We’re just putting all the steps together!

After you’ve read the room (AKA wave), we help you locate the spot with the longest potential ride. Or, as our pirate friends say, ‘X Marks The Spot.’ *Arghhhh*.

Common Surfing Mistakes, Who?

Now you’re picking the right location - surfline and combining binary wave selection, you’re pretty much ready to single-handedly take on the ocean.

So, why stop here?

As you keep catching waves, we’ll help you add more complex maneuvers and skills into the mix. Learning to surf in Mexico never stops. There’s always a new bag of tricks to explore. And boy, our professional Wild Mex team has a LOT up their wetsuit sleeves.

Being an eternal student is so our thing.

We always move at a pace you’re comfortable with. If you wanna push your surf skills to the max, we’re on your side to help. We’re also cool with recapping the mistakes you make as a beginner surfer.

Any time in the water is time spent well. Yeeew!

Saving Energy While Learning To Surf In Mexico

Learn to catch waves with the BEST technique!

Surf Camp in Punta Mita is all about adrenaline and that rush only surfing can give! So, why are we saving energy??

Staying still and surfing might seem incompatible, but hear us out…

When you know where to position yourself, which paddling technique to use, and which waves are actually worth catching, you save much more energy. Why? Well, this gives you even more *oomph* to catch those worthwhile waves.

No one wants to clock the perfect wave but be too tired to grasp it. That’s a complete vibe kill.

Using up your energy waaay too quickly is a common mistake you make as a beginner surfer. However, we’re on hand to remind you that not every wave is worth YOUR time.

Be selective in yo’ battles.

Catch Waves With Ease

Catch waves with SPECTACULAR surfing hosts!

Finally, you get to spend Day 5 of surf camp in Punta Mita practising your craft.

Uh-huh, we give YOU the floor.

On the last day, we turn the tables and ask YOU what you want to work on. Identifying which skills you need to work on is essential, and we’re here to help you strengthen your knowledge.

Wanna work on picking the right location - surfline? You got it! Prefer fixing the common mistakes you make as a beginner surfer? We’re cool with that! Want to know how to properly wax your board? Maybe not the best time… but that’s important, too!

Once you nail those pesky hiccups, you’ll be the best on the beach.

Now, let’s put those surfing fundamentals to work–go!

Day 5 Surf Camp In Punta Mita Wrap-Up

Learning to surf in Mexico is an experience like no other, and we’re glad we had the chance to introduce you to coastal bliss.

We hope you’re ready to smash your goals out on the surf–nothing makes our pro surfers smile more than taking a team from their land legs to competent surfers! It’s like watching birds leave the nest, oh-so-sweet!
